For those who may have missed the press releases from earlier in the week and especially for those who may have memories from having visited the site in the past, these pictures are from a new publication issued by the museum in Auschwitz depicting scenes from the famous "Lili Jacob Album" juxtaposed against scenes shot from the same locations and angles today by photographer Pawel Sawicki. The technique is simple, but extremely effective - populating the modern view with the all-too-living "ghosts" of the victims.

I visited the site with my late wife the same year that Pope John Paul II made his last visit to his homeland, we were about two days ahead of him. It is a world heritage site. It was a cold and drab day which best suited it. I remember one of our group commenting to the local guide who was showing us around that it cannot be an easy job to do. She agreed.

What is further chilling is that the perpetrators photograped their actions in the first place.
