PostSubject: How Lenin Was Responsible for the Boys being in Blue   Sun 12 Nov 2017, 18:23

Today I read one of those interesting little stories that exemplify the odd linkages between events and their unexpected outcomes.

The Scottish Borders have long been a centre of production for fine fabrics and a hundred years ago were churning out barathea and cavalry twill for the British military. Not just British however, one company had been given an order from the Russian Imperial Army for a very large quantity of blue-grey material to outfit their troops. The looms duly churned out the fabric but before it could be delivered, or paid for, the Bolsheviks walked into the Winter Palace and, as we say up here, the game was a bogey.

Left with a warehouse full of unwanted material and a serious cash flow problem, the company (A. W. Hainsworth) approached the War Office with an offer of bargain fabric. In early 1918 the Royal Flying Corps became the Royal Air Force and were looking for a replacement for the army khaki that they had previously worn and so the new service was duly kitted out in the material previously destined for Nicolas's Imperial troops.

ferval,

I enjoyed your anecdote...it is unbelievable what all can happen in history...it has not to be always the big history, to be interesting...
For instance why the "Feldgrau" in Germany and the French stuck to their red blue tuniques in WWI?
I read something odd about why the Brown Skirts were brown...something to do with a big stock of...don't remember...and have no time to seek it back...already that much in "retard" on the fora...

Kind regards from Paul.

If memory serves, there were actually 4 British air forces in WWI. Black Joke Day saw theĀ  RFC & RNAS merged to become the RAF, but the IAF (Independent Air Force, a strategic bomber force) carried on until at least the end of the war. Its best known pilot was W E Johns.

Gilgamesh,

as an aside...

how glad I am to see you back on this forum...the father of the two monsters...don't say you have still the chickens...I really longed for a bit of wit from you on these boards...and I see that there is also a monster on the boards...and even more...a comic monster...

Kind regards from an old friend (next year 75!).

Ferval and here it is:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sturmabteilung

From the wiki:
"The SA were also called the "Brownshirts" (Braunhemden) from the color of their uniform shirts, similar to Benito Mussolini's blackshirts. The SA developed pseudo-military titles for its members. The SA ranks were adopted by several other Nazi Party groups, chief amongst them the Schutzstaffel (SS), which originated as a branch of the SA before being separated. Brown shirts were chosen as the SA uniform because a large number of them were cheaply available after World War I, having originally been ordered during the war for colonial troops posted to Germany's former African colonies.[1]

Kind regards from Paul.
