Sergeants Brody and Bilko got no response, so I've changed the next theme yet again. Hope this is all right - but maybe this thread has gone to meet its maker now. I do hope not - it's been fun.

I can't always join in these challenges since I am not always aware of the significance of the themes and googling helps but doesn't always give the connotations. I do know about Alton Towers though - my son took a school trip there once. It's not the sort of thing I like myself, so we haven't been ourselves. I will put my thinking cap on. (I also don't do these quizzes at the weekend. Would get growled at for time-wasting.)

I had a better one for the Olympic Torch, but I've been locked out all day, so couldn't post. Mine was:

"Stand where the torch may not discover us." (Troilus and Cressida Act V sc 2)

The torch discovered us in Devon yesterday and the bloody thing went out. Terribly embarrassing and surely a bad omen. God knows what will happen at the Opening Ceremony.

Sorry to interrupt the flow - back to the Challenge now.

I had to Google to find out who this "Teese" person was, and it turns out she's yet another soft-porn actress slash lingerie fetish freak slash ex-wife of Marilyn Manson, of whom we are expected to know purely on these grounds alone.

So it has to be the entire sonnet number 129, I fear. It covers all such travesties.

The expense of spirit in a waste of shame
Is lust in action; and till action, lust
Is perjured, murderous, bloody, full of blame,
Savage, extreme, rude, cruel, not to trust,
Enjoy'd no sooner but despised straight,
Past reason hunted, and no sooner had
Past reason hated, as a swallow'd bait
On purpose laid to make the taker mad;
Mad in pursuit and in possession so;
Had, having, and in quest to have, extreme;
A bliss in proof, and proved, a very woe;
Before, a joy proposed; behind, a dream.
All this the world well knows; yet none knows well
To shun the heaven that leads men to this hell.

Oh dear. Choosing poor old Dita for my theme seems to have been a bit of a faux pas.

Dita has been (not sure if she still is) the darling of the fashionable set in London. She's been the subject of several features in "Vogue":

http://www.vogue.co.uk/news/2010/10/28/all-in-the-detail

She is rather a strange woman, I agree, but it is unfair to suggest she is some kind of sleazy porn star. She's a burlesque "artiste", and she's been recently interviewed by the BBC. She comes across as an intelligent - and dignified - person.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-18105807

The smirking interviewer is extremely annoying.

Von Teese has also written an interesting article for the Independent on the history of Burlesque:

http://www.Independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/theatre-dance/features/a-brief-history-of-burlesque-471288.html
