I don't think these have come up here before ... and apologies for linking to another site but it is only 'The Guardian' so it's fairly innocuous (!):

I found the photos with a recognisable point of focus that had remained essentially unchanged: a church, a rock outcrop, a stream, a roadside curb, a tree (the same tree still alive!) ... to be very poignant:

The Guardian - American Civil War then-and-now photos

.... It's "interactive" with quite a lot of photos as well as some audio, so it might take a while to load, but I think it's well worth the wait.

I'm a sucker for these before and now photo-merges and these were really good examples by The Guardian's photographer David Levene. You are right, the Brompton Oak is particularly moving.

I've been looking for an excuse to post this image for a while. And since Twain was a Confederate lieutenant for two weeks (before he deserted) here might be a good place. The "before and after" aspect to the photograph is that it was originally a grainy, faded and bespeckled specimen before it got into the hands of British colourist Jordan Lloyd and Danish colorist Mads Madsen. The lads are only 27 and 19 respectively and they have specialised in Civil War era photographs, though this one is of course slightly later. But what a job they've done!

Agreed. It's doubled its girth in 150 years. The American Civil War sites actually have quite a few such 'witness trees'. There's another famous one at Evergreen Cemetery, Gettysburg which was largely damaged in a storm in 2008 but still lives:

Thank you for all of these photos - incredibly moving. And when visited something else lingers about many such sites. Sometimes it's overwhelming.

Have any of the photographs of the Civil War taken by Mathew Brady been colorized?

A quick Google search revealed many, yes. The Danish and British lads mentioned above have done some of Brady's, but so too have many others:

Frederick Louis,

all the photos of the American civil war, if in colour, are coloured.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2446391/Amazing-Civil-War-photographs-created-colorist-bring-eras-heroes-characters-life-color-time.html
But for instance those of early 1900 are real colour photographs as for instance these:

Kind regards, Paul.
